"Balance, peace and joy are the fruits of a successful life.  It starts with recognizing your talents and finding ways to serve others by using them."  Thomas Kincade

Balanced Literacy:

It is widely recognized that students need a variety of strategies to become proficient readers and writers (Hughes 207).  Alberta Education recognizes this, requiring educators to address all strands of English Language Arts: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing.

My desire to share the written word with students, combined with  presenting it in a manner that incorporates  all modalities is the essence of balanced literacy and how I naturally approach the delivery of English Language Arts.

Modeled reading and writing:  I model reading aloud to my students.  Stressing fluency, and intonation.  I also add a bit of dramatic, as directed by the author.  If the character is whispering I whisper, if the character is vehement, then my voice indicates this.  I enjoy the writing process and sharing this with my students.  Modeling writing is another opportunity to show my students what is expected of them.

Shared and interactive reading and writing:  My love of literature is infectious,  sharing and interacting with reading and writing is the reason I chose to be a English Language Arts educator.  Assisting students to become fluent, confident, communicators is very important to me and balance literacy provides the opportunity to accomplish this.

Guided Reading & Writing: Balanced Literacy provides the structure to expand a student's confidence of their ability as a reader and writer.  Assessing formatively and providing an abundance of feedback will produce strong readers and writers.

Independent Reading and Writing:  The ultimate goal is that as the teacher I have provided a balance of instruction, practice, assessment and feedback that will enable my students to be successful independent readers and writers.
