READING:

"Reading is a powerful means of communicating and learning.  It enables students to extend thier knowledge and use of language, increase their understanding of themselves and others, and experience enjoyment and personal satisfaction.  Reading provides students with a means of accessing the ideas, views and experiences of others.  By using effective reading strategies, students construct meaning and develop thoughtful and crifical understandings and interpretations of a variety of texts.  They also use reading strategies to reconstruct the meanings of others."  Alberta Program of Studies

EDUCATORS:   Reading permeates all facets of life.  There are managable ways to foster reading, even among the most reluctant.  The most
important thing to remember is reading can include magazines and graphic novels.  I have my students begin ever class with
a few minutes of free reading.  They know the expectations are for them to have a book and to come in a start reading.   This
affords me the time to take attendence and any housekeeping that pops up, without the fear of a  classroom management
                                       disaster.

The following are recommended websites for educators
Authorized Resourcces Database:  this site is a list of authorized resources by Alberta Education.
                                       http://education.alberta.ca/apps/lrdb/

Knowledge and Employability Studio:  This resource provides great strategies for teaching and implementin all strands of ELA
                                        http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/kes/index.html

PARENTS:  You are an integral part of you child's sucess in reading.  I would highly recommend having your child read for a minimum of 20 minutes
a night.  You may also use car rides to promote reading time.  My own children must read for 30 minutes before they can plug into
electronics on a road trip.  I also recommend reading outloud to your children.  Choose a classic that your children might not pick up
on their own and spend some time sharing the story together.  I am reading the Little House on the Prarie series to my children and
it has sparked some interesting converstions about homesteading and the simple way of life that the Laura and her family lead.

The following are recommended websites for parents:

Raz-Kids:  This is an online reading progam that is leveled with comprehension activities, geared toward elementary children.

Literacy: A World to Discover:  This provides a variety fo resources for parents regarding understanding and promoting
literacy at home.  This site is provide by Alberta Education
                                                                                                                http://education.alberta.ca/teachers/program/literacy.aspx

STUDENTS:  Reading can be fun!  Try to come up with great ideas of your own or try some of these:
Book Club:  Have a book club with your friends - all of you read a book then get together at recess, or at the local library and
share your favorite parts with your friends
Reading Nook: Create a special reading area in your bedroom.  Find some blankets and pillows and curl up with your
                                                                  favorite book
