VIEWING:
"Viewing is an integral part of contemporary life. This skill allows student to understand in which ways images and language may be used to convey ideas, values and beliefs. Viewing is an active process of attending to comprehending such visual media as television, advertising images, films, diagrams, symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and painting, Viewing enables students to acquire information and to appreciate the ideas and experiences of others. Many of the comprehension processes invoved in reading, such as previewing, predicting and making inferences, may also be used in viewing. Critical viewing enables students to acquire and assess information, appreciate the experiences of others, and understand and evaluate others' ideas and perspectives." Alberta Program of Studies

Parents: When viewing media ask your children about what they see. Are you seeing the same thing? What is important to them in the message?
Students: Question what you see. Why has the illustrator added black to the picture? Why did the director choose a specific camera angle?
Discuss what you see with a friend, do they see the same things you do?
