Books I enjoy and think you might too:
Kids are Worth It: giving your child the gift of inner discipline - by: Barbra Coloroso
I firmly believe in Coloroso's theory of the Backbone parent. This is how I aim to parent my children. I feel that this theory can easily transfer to a classroom management theory. It is how I aim to manage the students in my care.
The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern
I recently read this story (Jan 2013) actually I listened to it as an audio book. I think it might be my new favorite book! I find that the story line, or rather lines and the word- smithing is fantastic. I can't wait to purchase it and read it.
The Buddha in the Classroom: Zen Wisdom to inspire Teachers by Donna Quesada
This is a great book that does not have to be read from front to back. Choose a spot that interests you and read from there. The author says in the introduction: "Some days, some semesters, an perhaps even some years will be more challenging and more wearisome that others. But my wish is that you find within this series of classroom vignettes a lasting source of encouragement and inspiration. Although I draw from Eastern teaching, the wisdom is for all of us, regardless of personal background, creed, or fait, for inspiration is universal."
The Soul of a Butterfly: Reflections on Life's Journey by Muhammad Ali with Hana Yasmeen Ali
I loved this book so much that I will be "reading it forward." I feel it contains to much wisdom to sit and collect dust on my bookshelf. Ali is so much more than just a boxer, he is a humanitarian and yes, he is pretty too;0)
Wheat Belly by William Davis MD
I really like this book, mainly because it is written like a textbook. Every chapter has several sources that are cited. I believe in Dr. Davis' theory, our bodies were not meant to ingest wheat. This book is part of the reason why I have chosen to eat gluten free.
Age is Just a Number: Achieve Your Dreams at Any Stage in Your Life by Dara Torres with Elizabeth Weil
This autobiography is about Olympic Medallist Dara Torres. She is very close to my age and competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing China at the age of 41 years old. She is part of the reason that I compete in triathlons, and she is part of the reason I will graduate from university at the age of 43.
The Life of Pi by Yann Martel
This is an amazing book! I devoured it in one weekend! I just could not put it down, it is a compelling story cleverly word-smithed. With themes of spirituality - (I love that Pi is a practicing Hindu, Catholic and Muslim!) the ethics of zoos (What is freedom - really?) and of course the will to survive, I highly recommend this book. Now I can't wait to see the movie!
